Since the Qing dynasty, English education is a process of tough exploration madeby English teaching theorists and teachers. For English teachers, they should try to havea good command of pedagogies and also use the pedagogies flexibly. Audiolingualismhas a long history in English education pedagogies. It has held its place in today’sEnglish teaching. It has its own advantages and disadvantages. This paper attempts toexplore the reasonable and the unreasonable, and tries to discard the cross of it and keepits essence. After the outbreak of the Second World War, in order to meet the practicalneeds, the United States military and foreign language schools offered a variety oftraining classes, expecting to train some foreign language speakers in a short time.Because of this social needs, Audiolingualism has come into being. Audiolingualismowes its existence to the Behaviourism and Structuralism. Students’ good habits areengendered through stimulus-response and positive reinforcements. Audiolingualismstresses sentence pattern drill, primary of speech, mistake correction and learning insmall steps.This study was based on the Senior High School English grammar teachingclasses. Through questionnaires and classroom observations, this study tries to find outwhether Audiolingualism is still in use and the condition of its application, then thestudy will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Audiolingualism. At last thisstudy will explore Audiolingualism’s development potential and its developmentdirections.Based on questionnaire surveys and classroom observations, the findings are asfollows: 1. On the condition ofAudiolingualism’s applicationThough Audiolingualism is still in use, most Senior High Shool teachers adapt itaccording to the teaching contents, teaching aims and students’ situations. They do notcompletely follow the teaching procedures of Audiolingualism. Various drills are usedin the class.2. On the advantages ofAudiolingualismAudiolingualism regards speech as primary, stresses knowledge review and theprocess of learning from the simple to the complicated, besides, it advocates theinductive ability. The mother tongue is limited in the class, and maximize the targetlanguage. Meanwhile, English thinking are encouraged.3. On the disadvantages ofAudiolingualismThe center of Audiolingualism is sentence pattern drills. Language are highlystructured. And most drills are mechanical, away from daily life and semantics. It iseasy to make students tired. Its theory basis-the behaviorism psychology andstructuralism in linguistics has shortcomings. Furthermore, Audiolingualism putsteacher in the center of classes rather than students.4. The development potential and development directionsSentence pattern drills should be well-designed, meaningful and communicative.During teaching process, teachers had better create a relaxed classroom atmosphere.Grammar teaching should be involved in contexts to cultivate students’ communicativeability. Students are the center of teaching. Their personalities should be respected.Creative thinking are encouraged.
