Writing is one of the four basic language skills,i.e. listening, speaking, reading andwriting. Furthermore, it is, for English learners in senior school, an extremely importantexpression method besides speaking. In terms of the current situation, a lot ofprofessionals from China and overseas are studying writing, whose procedures andconclusions are different for their different focuses, and these studies have revealedrules and characteristics of English writing. The research focus of this essay is to studythe impacts of lexical phrases on English writing. As we all know, vocabulary is one ofthe basic elements for a language, which has huge effects on writing, such as fluency,accuracy, complexity and etc... The Lexical Approach proposed by Michael Lewis willbe conducted on the subject, in order to testify whether learner’s writing ability, throughinputting lexical phrases with purposes and organizing, can be effectively improved,especially his/her ability to choose vocabulary. A student who is in her grade two ofsenior school has been chosen as the subject in this essay. In this case study, the generalmethod is qualitative one, whose main emphasis is on non-quantitative data. During thecase study, a pre-test, middle-tests and a post-test were conducted to evaluate currentEnglish writing level of this subject, how she was doing and the final performance of her in writing. Besides, interviews and observations about this subject will be adoptedas well as her self-observation every two weeks in the process of case study. This studylasted one semester. A conclusion which is finally summarized is that Lexical Approachhas effect on the improving of English writing to some extent. For the subject, thedifficult level of writing has been decreased. Moreover, the whole structure of thissubject’s writing has been improved and been more reasonable, comparing with herprevious writing. Having been through this study, the complexity of vocabulary chosenin her writing has been increased gradually. At the meantime, the subject has been not ashesitated as before and been able to write vocabularies related to content in a fast way.
