Nowadays, the main task of China education reform and development is thecomprehensive promotion of quality education, which especially focuses on thedevelopment of vocational education with Chinese characteristics. With the worldglobalization, China conducts more frequent and extensive contact with foreign countries,which makes the vocational English teaching a more practical goal. The aim of Englishteaching lies in cultivating students’ ability of communicating in English, which demandsthe change of English teaching methods on the basis of the characteristics of seniorvocational school students. Situational teaching with a long history meets the demands ofvocational English teaching.This thesis is carried out by focusing on the following three questions: What is thepresent situation as well as the existing problems of the implementation of English shortplay teaching based on the situational teaching ideas in senior vocational school? Whatteaching principles and strategies should be followed during the implementation of Englishshort play teaching based on the situational teaching ideas? How can the ideas ofsituational teaching be further implemented in vocational English teaching? Aimed at theseproblems, the author presents the overall implementation situation of English short playteaching based on the situational teaching ideas by conducting a survey among thestudents in Ningbo Vocational Education School where the author works. Firstly,vocational school students lack interest in learning English. Secondly, teachers carry outthe method of English short play teaching based on the situational teaching ideas withoutcorresponding theoretical guidance, which leads to the random topic adopting and lack ofaim in teaching. Thirdly, teachers guide ineffectively, which makes the dominant roleplayed by the teachers not prominent. All the above result in inefficiency of English shortplay teaching and this teaching method doesn’t take effect. Based on the present situationand problems, the author illustrates the three main principles and four strategies whichEnglish short play teaching should follow by presenting the case of conducting English short play teaching among the good students during the Senior Vocational School ShortPlay Contest training and the case of conducting English short play teaching among thegeneral students in daily English teaching. The three main principles are listed as follows:(1) Initiative-Arousing principle (2) Sensation—Reinforcement principle (3) Student-—Centered, Teacher—Oriented principle. The four strategies are listed as follows:(1)Topics should be close to the real life so as to create a natural situation.(2) The studentsshould expand thinking by playing roles.(3) Body language should be fully used to createthe vivid drama.(4) Properties should be properly used to achieve a more real situation.Finally the core ideas of the situational teaching, cognition and affection interaction, whichmeans arousing the students’ experience and intriguing the students’ affection and interestsby presenting concrete and distinctive images, will be further illustrated by analyzing theabove two cases. The core ideas of the situational teaching will be further implemented inthe future English teaching.
