Objectives:School plays an important role in the popularization of oral health knowledge and thebehavior formation of high school students. In order to know the oral health status of highschool students and to design to oral health education curriculum for them, to provideevidence of targeted oral health education for high school students.Methods:According to the economic level of the region, discussion of panel, checking out ofrelated information, the Baotou City3middle schooles was chosen for the investigation bythe principles of representative sampling. The stratified random sampling was used in thesurvey and the grade was hierarchical basis. Students of three classes in each grade from3middle schooles were randomly selected for the investigation. Parental consent andwillingness of high school students were obtained before oral health examination. VisualFoxpro6.0software was used for data entry and database set up. Statistical analysis wasconducted by Spss13.0statistical software. According to the "Health Guidelines forPrimary and Secondary School Students" of Ministry of Education in People’s Republic ofChina, six grades in the middle school was divided into two levels, one was grades7-9of middle school; the other was grades10-12of high school. Descriptive analysis wasconducted in accordance with the two levels in the six grades.Results:A total of1862students, with854boys and947girls, aged16.45±1.32, wereinvestigated and1801passed, the pass rate was96.72%. The level one had900, and leveltwo had901students.23.7%had regular consumption of sweets,15.3%had regularconsumption of carbonated beverages and30.8%often had snack, with33.4%in levelone and28.2%in level two. There was significant difference (P=0.016) between the twolevels. Reported smoking rate was0.9%and drinking rate was1.0%in high schoolstudents.18.3%of students had caries,11.5%had gingivitis and different orthodonticneeds rate was2.9%.73.7%students knew that taking oral examination once a year isnecessary;75.7%knew that September20is the Love Teeth Day;35.9%knew that plaqueis the main cause of periodontal disease.67.2%knew that sugar and sweets and moresusceptible to dental caries. Those who thought oral disease affects general healthaccounted for90.5%.76.2%students believed teeth status are inherently and has little todo with self-protection was not correct, with82.4%in level two and70.0%in level one.There was significant difference between the two levels (P=0.000).57.0%high schoolstudents could brush teeth twice a day in the morning and evening.5.0%thought oneshould see a dentist if there is blood when brushing. Those who often ate dessert or drinksweet drinks after brushing before going to bed accounted for7.8%.23.4%studentsthought their general health was good and16.7%students thought their oral health wasgood. Only45.3%of high school students thought there was no need for oral health care.The ladder-formed design of oral health education teaching content for middle schoolstudents was provided.Conclusions:Students’oral health status was poor, oral health knowledge and behavior is not ideal.Various forms of oral health education should be carried out to promote high schoolstudents’ oral health. The focus of the oral health education programs for high schoolstudents should be to master the correct brushing method and fluoride toothpaste; aware the importance of orthodontic treatment; prevent dental trauma; check out of wisdom teethand regular oral examination. Strategies of oral health education for high school studentswere provided from perspectives of government departments, oral health care institutionsand middle schools.
