The Impact Of Racism On American’s Foreign Policies Towards China

Racism is deeply rooted in the minds of Americans, from political elites to the public. The cultural background of America’s racism has an impact on its foreign policies. In the old days, racism was a theoretical tool used by America to defend its aggression, expansion and oppression of other nations; in contemporary it becomes the ideological weapon for America’s implementation of global hegemony strategy. In Sino-U.S. relations, America’s diplomatic policies towards China are also influenced by its racism. In history, America used “The Theory of Yellow Peril” to demonstrate the legitimacy of anti-Chinese policy; after the founding of new China, especially since the Reform and Opening-up, the United States has also spread the “China Threat Theory” and “The Theory of China’s Arrogance” to slander the successful experience of China’s development path and model, and conceals the pride and prejudice of “Western-culture Oriented Theory”, suppressing China’s rise.This paper takes racism as an important factor that affects USA’s foreign policies towards China. Based on researching the history of American racism and supplemented by Literature Research and Causal Analysis, this paper demonstrates the inherent relations between racism and USA’s foreign policies towards China. First of all, this paper analyzes the historical and cultural background of America’s racism. Starting from the concept of racism, the paper elaborates the development, essence of racism in America and the influence of racism in America’s foreign policies. Then, the paper describes the racism in America’s foreign policies towards China. This paper points out that the image of the Orient and the image of China in American eyes are created by the USA based on the perspective of America’s racism, and they have fixed stereotypes, such as dictatorship and no respect for human rights, etc. According to these stereotypes, America created “The Theory of Yellow Peril”, “China Threat Theory” and “The Theory of China’s Arrogance”, behind which the racism prejudice hide.These comments affect and support USA’s foreign policies towards China. Finally, this paper concludes that Racism has special cultural origin in America and it is hard to eliminate it.While towards the sustained danger caused by America’s racism,China need to keep improving its cultural soft power and international discource power.
