The Study Of Northern Song Dynasty’s Imperial Harem System

Northern Song is a Dynasty, who attaches great importance to the legal system. As we all know, the family law throughout the whole dynasty. In early days of Northern Song Dynasty, in consideration of historical experience and lesson of Tang Dynasty, governor sets up a system to constraint the harem’s authority. The System of Imperial Harem is more systematic and more institutionalization in Northern Song Dynasty. The main aim of the family law is to nip attacks in the bud for that purpose carry out a pre-emptive attack. The Combination of Courtesy and Law is an outstanding characteristic of ancient legal system, with thousands of years of evolution, the courtesy is established to a stern hierarchical system. Empresses and imperial concubines play a great role in the crisis of succession to the throne in Song Dynasty in history, which is different from other dynasties. This is related to the strict management system. This article consists of four sections to elaborate on the all aspects of the system of imperial harem system in Northern Song Dynasty.The first part is about the legislative background and legal form of the system, proceeding form domestic discipline, anti fraud policies and its legal form. The second part mainly introduces main contents of imperial harem system in Northern Song Dynasty, it includes the legal regulation, power division of the court management organization, and the laws and regulations on prevention of female disaster. The third part mainly talks about the law of the provisions on prevention of despotism in the period of behind a screen, starting form the legality, special provisions for the imperial empress, legal regulation and the supervision and restriction. The last section of the article mainly talks about the implementation effect, and the objective evaluation of Northern Song Dynasty’s imperial harem system.
