| The greatest challenge of humanity has always been the maintenance of peace and security in society. beside natural disasters, the biggest threats on humans are caused by man himself more generally through atrocious wars and other violence. The world has experienced two major wars during which the belligerent states used the most destructive weapons. The weapons of mass destruction was used during the first and second world war causing millions of dead and wounded. Many internationals initiative have been taken to avoid from humanity a third world war. Initiatives that have failed for the most part because of geopolitical order problems and hegemonic aspiration of states in the international arena.Just after the end of World War â…¡, during which two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the United States and Soviet Union have embarked on a armaments race. The goal was to be able to make a weapon that could deter the enemy from eventual attack. From 1945 to 1991, the two super-powers have set up an immeasurable arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. Scientists spoke about the assured capacity of mass destruction (Mutual Assured destruction-MAD-) united states and Russia during the Cold War. The two countries account for more than 90% of the totality of nuclear warheads that exist in the world. One consequence of the cold war was the proliferation of nuclear weapons which critical point was the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. The United states and the USSR almost declared war to each other with risk of using nuclear weapons. Moreover, the two countries clashed in an indirect way by helping allied states to obtain the necessary means to manufactured nuclear weapons. Today there are nine states possessing the nuclear bomb. The point is that all these states are in a situation where a potential conflict with one or other nuclear states is imminent; for example:India and Pakistan; North Korea and China. One of the most worrying phenomena of the 21st century is the international terrorism which becoming widespread. The terrorists are using increasingly sophisticated means to make most possible dead toll. The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction would be very dangerous for the international security. More international cooperation and initiatives must be taken in response to challenge enormous security issues. Decisions should be taken to completely eliminated existing weapons of mass destruction. With the end of the Cold War, there still no reasons for nuclear states to continue to put nuclear weapons in the heart of their strategies of defense and security. In addition, energetic measures must be taken against states that proliferate any kind of weapons of mass destruction such North Korean regime. A world with zero nuclear is quite possible for the good of all humanity. |
