With the acceleration of China’s modernization process, the environmental problems is becoming increasingly serious, many of the environmental laws and regulations failed to protect the trend of ecological deterioration effectively.In contrast, the minorities which have a long history, for their existence and development are related tightly with surroundings,they are aware of the importance of protecting ecological environment. On the basis of long-term production and life practice, They gradually formed a series of environmental protection concepts and customary law. For thousands of years of continuing to protect the ecological environment of the region, so the original ecological environment can be preserved, these measures had made important contributions to ecological environmental protection of minority areas. It also has provided useful experience for Chinese ecological environment protection.In view of this, the paper is on the basis of summarizing the results of previous studies, on the perspective of environmental law, through analyzing the concept, characteristics,effects of minority customary law, to discuss the contribution and effects it has brought to our country’s environmental protection. The paper also analyze the embarrassments which are facing by minority customary law,of course the causes will also be analyzed. This paper will point out that the way out is to realize its modernization. On the basis of analyzing the meaning of modernization of minority customary law, the paper will analyzed the reasons of modernizing minority customary law from the perspectives of necessity and feasibility. At the end of this paper will discuss the channels of modernizing minority customary law from sides of updating conceptions, continuing innovating, applicable complementary, developing education, developing economy.
