A Research On The Problem Of The Elderly With Dementia In Pension Institutions

At present, China has the largest aging population and the most rapidly aging society all around the world. As the aging degree deepening, the elderly with dementia gradually get a lot of concerns. Dementia is a persistent degenerative disease, leading to the elderly to lose the life capacity and cause some mental problems, which makes them more likely to choose the institution endowment. However, the elderly with dementia in the institutions face with even greater challenges than other old people. Facing the problems of the elderly with dementia in institutions, policies of participation from all parties can promote the mutual adaptation of the elderly dementia and the institution and improve the quality of later life of the elderly with dementia.I took the elderly with dementia in XX institution of XT city as the example and developed an exploratory research on the issue of institution endowment of the elderly dementia. In the thesis I applied the push-pull theory, social stereotypes theory and the social damage theory. I used the interviewing method, participant observation method and some other methods. First of all, I analyzed the reason why the elderly dementia families choose to send them to institutions with push-pull theory, and found out that they had no other choices. After that, I investigated and analyzed the problems of the elderly dementia in institutions, including safety problem, rehabilitation care problem and social damage problem caused by social stereotypes. Finally, to deal with these problems, I tried to offer countermeasures and suggestions with reference value. Those countermeasures include three aspects: to create a safe environment and eliminate safety hazards; to respect for the elderly and encourage the elderly rehabilitation training; to pay attention to psychology and reduce the social damage.
