In 1947 Mountbatten Plan declared the end of British rule in India, Pakistan and India got independence respectively, which started friction and conflict between the two countries for over a century. In 1991 the collapse of Soviet Union put an end to the bipolar structure, and complex and profound changes took place in the international situation. Leaders of the two countries began to gradually change and adjust their bilateral relations according to domestic and international environment. However, the relationship between the two countries has not always remained stable, after the nuclear test in 1998, India and Pakistan both become nuclear powers, in fact, the subcontinent was shrouded in the shadow of a nuclear war. The relations between India and Pakistan made great improvement and development in 2004, the two sides launched a comprehensive dialogue process. After ten years of peaceful talks, the two sides finally made positive progress in peaceful agreement, Kashmir, military and anti-terrorism, economy and international trade, which deprived not only from their consideration of reality and strategy of the countries, but also from the big push of the international community, especially the big countries. In recent years, both India and Pakistan have gradually focused on their own economic construction, and the positive peace talks between the two governments whose people have shown strong desires on peace and they are looking forward to the maintenance of peace and stability. But on the other hand, many things between the two countries, such as bitterness and complaints for long, lack of trust, structural contradiction, territorial disputes, armament competition, religious and ethnic conflict, cross-border terrorism and other issues, made the prospects of the India-Pakistan peace process not clear. But in the long run, the improvement of relations between the two countries is irreversible; the peace process would not be easily interrupted. Although relations between the two countries are always restricted by the Kashmir problem, and the conditions to solve the problem of Kashmir are not mature, the two countries can shelve disputes first, deepen cooperation, fade out hostility, increase mutual trust, and eventually create conditions to solve the disputes.India and Pakistan are two important neighbors of China, their peaceful and friendly relationship is vitally significant to maintain the stability of the border areas in western China and to promote China’s western development strategy. Analysis of the relations between India and Pakistan after the cold war is advantageous for us to strategically think about China’s surrounding environment, and to make out foreign policies, and to build up a harmonious relationship between China and its neighbors. This paper firstly tells about historical process and major events of the India-Pakistan relations, understands the present situation of India-Pakistan relations under the new situation, then analyzes the internal and external factors affecting relations between them, finally on the basis of the above, it puts forward a simple prediction on future prospects of their relationship over a period of time. |
