Since Nigeria merged in1914, its domestic conflicts erupted and intensified continuously, even turned into civil war, which leads to Nigeria become the "melting pot" of violence in21centuary, being a typical unstable African country.The root cause of domestic conflicts in Nigeria is ethnic and religious factors. The ethnic and religious contradictions in Nigeria began in1914, the British colonial domination period., and gradually emerged after its independence in1960. The contradictions mainly appears as four basic forms, including the conflict of ethnic majorities, the conflict of ethnic minorities, religious conflict and terroristic conflict. These contradictions, which linked by the ethnic and religious issues, evolved in a progressive and spiral way. It affects the security and development of Nigeria, becoming a huge challenge to the peace in West Africa, even in the world.Taking the domestic conflicts in Nigeria as research object, this paper briefly introduces the general situation of Nigerian conflicts over the past century, makes focus on the basic form and the main cause of Nigerian conflicts. According to the policies and measures of the previous governments for solving ethnic and religious conflicts, the paper aims to analyze the direction of governmental management in the future. This paper argues that, the key of solving the conflicts is to handle with the ethnic and religious contradictions properly. It is necessary to stabilize the economic development, strengthen social management, establish an effective conflict prevention and control mechanism, and promote international cooperation, then Nigeria can achieve the development of integration, and be developed as a powerful modern country.
