The thesis studied two different types of charities helping mental retardation people: Wen Xin Home is led and supported by government; Beijing Huiling is a community organized charity. Through discussion around these two charities’ differences and common characters on helping mental retard people integrate into the local communities, the thesis attempt to reveal the elements which affect mental retard people rejoin the community, and also try to promote suggests to assist mental disabled people become a part of community.The case study on these two charities employed depth interview, open discussion, participant observation, and reference study. Based on social integration theory, the thesis analyzed the performance of two charities from three angles: interpersonal relationship, employment, and life style. From interpersonal relationship point of view, Wen Xin showed inequality between care taker vs mental disabled people and prejudice. The mental disabled people are being managed instead of being cared. Furthermore, in a relatively more closed environment, the mental disabled people lack of opportunities to get in touch with outside environment. At Huiling, the relationship between staff and mental retard people is caring and being cared. The disabled people are able to find their friends, even lovers freely, and they are helping each other. From life style point of view, Wen Xin occasionally had spontaneous simple game such as “sand bag throwing”, “house jumping” etc. Nevertheless, the disabled people rarely have chance to play outside. On contrast, they have much more choices at Huiling such as singing, dancing, stage performance, even traveling. From employment point of view, both charities lack of service focusing on this. Through the study of these two charities and emphasis on social integration, through their achievements, this thesis try to discuss a more effective suggests to help mental retard people rejoin their communities.
