People gradually recognized the seriousness of the ecological problem, which is already a hot topic in academic research. The relation between nature and human beings is the major part of it. Engels’ attention was highly focused on this problem early. Nowadays, the economy develops rapidly, but the overdevelopment and irrational life style have already caused devastating consequences to the environment we live in. This paper,at the background of the globe ecological crisis and the severe situation of the environment in our country, presents the ecological thought in Engels’ classics from the point of view of history of thought. In order to summarize the basic contents and main features of Engels’ ecological thoughts, it uses documentary and comparative research methods, as well as the method combing theory and practice. Through the in–depth study of Engels’ ecological thought, it is easy to find that Engels’ attention was focused on the relation between nature and human beings both in his youth and late in life. This paper suggests that Engels’ ecological thought still has realistic significance after one and a half centuries. This paper can be divided into 5 parts: In the first part, the introduction explains the background of ecological thought and the overseas and domestic research status; In the second part, it further presents the development stages and main features of Engels’ ecological thought, by the introduction of Engels’ times; In the third part, it explains the main contents of Engels’ ecological thought; In the forth part, it highlights the contemporary values of his ecological thoughts and its influence toward the construction of socialism ecological civilization of our country; In the fifth part, it comes to the conclusion and points out the importance of reviewing Engels’ classics and the realistic inspiration it brings us.
