Since the end of the cold war, although the Baltic area has no more wars, but the battle around this Rimland is still in the stage, the intervention of American power makes the situation more complicated. Why development situation of the Baltic is so complicated? We might as well start from the perspective of geography and history, based on the theory essence derived from Halford Mackinder, John Speakman, Zbigniew Brzezinski and other theorists, apply the classic geopolitical theory to explain the formation and change of the geopolitical pattern in Baltic. In order to explain the different features of the Baltic geopolitical layout in different periods, which in the control of the different power, this article pay attention to the geographical location and geographical environment, economic value and strategic value, to analyze the features and significance of the Baltic geopolitical environment, what’s more, to account for the reason why the various forces (both inside and outside) intervene in the battle around the Baltic area.Thereinto, as an important force in the Baltic area, Russia has overwhelming influence on sea the formation and evolution of the Baltic geopolitical layout. Because of the superior strategic location and the great economic value, which found in the Baltic, is propitious to the power increase and the national security of Russia. Thus, impelled by the power and safety, Russia has captured and controlled the Baltic area many times, meanwhile, it has led the change of the geopolitical pattern in Baltic. In the end of the20th century, with East European upheaval and Soviet disorganization, the world geopolitical layout has been through a remarkable change. The independence of Soviet republics and the unification of Germany, which has caused a great change of the Eurasian geopolitical layout, a power vacuum had been formed on the "heartland". Under the control of the United States, Russia, Germany and other mini-states in the Baltic, the geopolitical pattern in Baltic presents the development trend of multi-polarization.
