The issue of the labor for the women in the urban is a significant component in the women’s liberation movement. Discipline through the labor force is a tactic in the process of state building and social reconstruction.The women in the Great Leap Forward had a strong connection with the modernization in China. Women were rebuilt through the mobilization and being absorb to the factory, their identity was undertook a big change from the housewife to the women in the socialism through the ideology education.Women’s liberation reflects the unprecedented giant recognize of the women, however, the process itself is incomplete. Women in the Great Leap Forward were facing the dilemma of being a women and being a labor force in the system. There is a tension between their identities due to the neglect the gender difference.In the dissertation, the author applied the perspective of state building theory to study the women in Shanghai in the Great Leap Forward.
