Since the reform and opening-up took place more than three decades ago, Chinese political, economic, cultural and social development has undergone tremendous changes. These lead to transformational changes in Chinese social structure. In the process of transition, people’s social identities are changed and people are migrating more frequently than before. These eventually lead to the formation of new social classification and social reintegration. Among all, changes in the social status of Chinese peasants have been relatively huge, and they affect the entire social development and social evolution profoundly. This is because Chines peasants have largest population among all social classes. They are not only the creators of social wealth, but also the main force of social production and play an important role in promoting social reform. Paying close attention to changes in Chinese peasants’ social status is the best way to analyze contemporary relationships among all social classes in China. It helps not only in solving internal problems Chinese peasants face during the transitional period, but also helps in understanding issues among different social classes in China. Studying changes in Chinese peasants’ social status has an important strategic significance in the smooth progression of socialist industrialization, marketization and urbanization. In this paper, the authorwill firstly state the theoretical basis used, followed by elaborating on changes of Chinese peasants’ social status in different phases after reform and opening-up. The changes of Chinese peasants’ social status in the phase of building a well-off society will be discussed in detail. The characteristics and causes of changes in this phase will be analyzed. The effects of changes on the economic and political development in Chinese rural areas will also be explored.
