There were three main social ideological trends in the world of the20th century, namely,nationalism, capitalism, and socialism.Andnationalism still has enormous vitality and profoundly affects the stabilityand development of the world with the rapid development ofglobalization in the21st century. What makes nationalism having such along-lasting influence is that it has the particular social functions.Thispaper argues that nationalism can meet the demand of people in thepursuit of superior rank position in modern society, which is one of itssocial functions.Three main research methods are used in this paper: literature study,comparative research and historical research. Under the inspiration of“modernism” national theory and “ethnic group-symbolism”, this paperholds that modern historical process of a historical history community, itsunique ethnic group and cultural basis will jointly prompts the productionof nationalism. And the process of nationalism is changing accompanyingwith influence of hierarchical differences among nations. Exploring therelationship between the nationalism and the influence of hierarchicaldifferences among nations being the main task of this article, referring tothe classical works of nationalism, presenting the origin and rheology ofthe nationalism in a chronological order, and further comparing thedifferent types of nationalism, this paper aims to summarize the innerlogic of the nationalism’s existence and evolution under the hierarchicalsociety, and further explores the relationship between nationalism logicand ethnic problems.This paper consists of four parts. The first partreviews the origin ofWestern Europe nationalism and North America nationalism. The secondpart points out the logic of nationalism under hierarchy society basing onreviewing the origin of nationalism. The third part is to verify theexistence of logic of the nationalism by presenting the rheology of thenationalism. The fourth part mainly analyzes the relationship between thelogic of nationalism and the current ethnic problems.
