The modern navy knowledge occupies a key position in the western new knowledge acquiredby Li Hongzhang, and is also an important component in his update knowledge and the knowledgeformation. This article analyses the process of the navy cognition of Li Hongzhang in thepreparation of the coast defence comprehensively, and also summaries the system about themodern navy knowledge formed by Li Hongzhang during the process of the preparation of thecoast defence. On the basis of this analysis, the article investigates the way by which Li Hongzhangacquires the Navy knowledge furtherly. Thus, it is better to acquaint the update knowledge and theknowledge composition of Li Hongzhang who is called the father of navy in the late Qing Dynastyall-round.The full essay has three parts:Firstly, the beginning of the text is the introduction. This part introduces the reason of thispaper research and has a review of the relevant academic history in brief, and also illustrates thethinking of this article briefly.Secondly, the second part of this article introduces the navy cognition of Li Hongzhang andthe composition of his knowledge. Li Hongzhang had somewhat cognition about the navy in theearly when he stationed troops in Shanghai, but the range of his cognition was limited to only navalequipment at that time. After he became the governor of Zhili and was responsible for preparingthe coast defence, his navy cognition was deepening in constant following the preparation of thecoast defence activities in depth. His navy cognition included naval equipment、navalinfrastructure、modern naval personnel、naval unified planning、navy regulations during thatperiod. These cognition formes into a relatively systematic modern navy knowledge system.Thirdly, the third part of this essay analyzes the way by which Li Hongzhang acquires theNavy knowledge. Li Hongzhang’s navy knowledge has been formed basically in the practicalactivities. Specifically, that way is composed of three parts: practical activities, the influence ofaids and staff and his colleagues, the influence of the books about navy which were translated atthat time. This three sides make up the way by which Li Hongzhang acquires the Navy knowledge,and represents the way by which the official in the late Qing Dynasty obtains the western newknowledge, and also appears that the mode of transmission of the western culture is diverse. Analyzing the way by which Li Hongzhang acquires the Navy knowledge can be a beneficialcomplement to the research of the spread of western learning path in the current study of thewestern learning spreading to the East.In the end, summaries the whole article and elaborates the basis and value of this new angle toobserve Li Hongzhang by the point of intellectual history.
