The Study On Influencing Factors Of Landing Position Effects During Uyghur Reading

Previous study about the landing position effects is almost concerned about the alphabetic language or chinese reading, Although the content is different, but they are all prove the existence of landing position effect. where to move the eyes is a heated topic during the reading process,Is the decision of where to move controlled by low level visual properties or high-level language processing ?It is still in disagreement Based on the previous researches,we tried to investigate the landing position effect during Uyghur reading process, we intended to use the Uyghur unique characters, such as the inter-word space(low level visual properties) and different type of suffixes(high-level language processing),how the landing position influenced by them. we have two experiments, the first one is mean to prove that, is there a preferred viewing location during the Uyghur reading and how the landing position influenced by the low level visual properties;The second one is based on the first experiment. in order to investigate whether the landing position is affected by Uyghur suffixes during the reading process.In our research, we use the Eyelink 2000 eye tracker to record the Eye movement path, we chose several college students as the subjects, they are all Uyghur natives, two experiments are designed to explore the Uyghur characteristics affect the landing position. The first experiment: is there a preferred viewing location,and how the landing position influenced by low level visual properties, we use 3(word length: short, medium, long) ×3(none, less, more)two factors between subject experiment design to investigate if there is a preferred viewing location and how the landing position influenced by the word length and inter-word space. the second experiment: how the landing position influenced by high level language factors, we use 2(word length: medium, long) ×2(inter-word space: less, more)×2(suffix: configuration, wor d-formation)three factors between subject experiment design to investigate how the landing position influenced by the word length, inter-word space and suffixes.To summarize, results as follows:(1) During the Uyghur reading, there is a preferred viewing location, with the word length increase, the first fixation towards the center.(2)Similar to other results from the alphabetic writing, low level visual properties——word length and inter-word space are the key factors to determine where to move the eyes. we can see that, with the word spaces increased, for the short words, the first landing position moved to the end part, but for the long words, it towards the center and begin of a word, as the word length increased, and refixation probability increased.(3) During the Uyghur reading, the decision of reader’s landing position where to move is not influenced by Suffixes.
