The source of this translation report derives from a book of The Ladies’ Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness, written by Florence Hartley. In this book, the author describes the definition of politeness, how important it is to be polite, and how to be truly polite. However, the most important information conveyed in this book is that all women should behave like a real lady both physically and mentally. The book itself and its translated version serve as the subject of this paper together, in which a lot of typical examples are cited. In the process of translation, the translator finds that this text is of typical text features. Hence she mainly adopts the text typology theory to guide the translation. With Reiss?s text typology theory as its theoretical foundation, this paper mainly discusses the importance of text type and its function during the process of translating manual. The translator adopts appropriate techniques, such as division, addition and restructuring accordingly on the basis of analyzing the type of the text and its linguistic features to solve problems encountered in the translation process, and summarizes the employment of relevant translation techniques.Through discussing the use of translation strategies, the author draws some conclusions related to the translation of informative and operative text. Understanding of context is key to ensure the effective transmission of information by wording and phrasing. Reproducing the original style is crucial, that is, there are numerous imperative sentences appearing in the source text and the translated version should also keep the same sentence structure and pattern. Then understanding target readers? needs and meeting their requirements is critical to make readers sympathize with opinions proposed in the text. Although this report has made a summary about the achievements of the informative and operative text translation, there still are some limitations and problems which need to further investigate.
