| This translation report is based on the source text excerpted from the book The Power of the Word which is written by the Canadian occultist Donald Tyson. He devotes his life to the attainment of a complete gnosis of the art of magic in both theory and practice. He aims to build up a practical personal development system for those from the East, West, past and present. It will also contribute to finding the reason for individual existence and the method to achieve existence significance. This excerpt is from chapter six to chapter eight. The content of this text involves knowledge about Tetragrammaton, Pentagrammaton, the hieroglyphic monad as well as their related occult traditions and cultural origin. Therefore, it can be regarded as a culture-focused text.Focusing on exploring the translation strategies and techniques through “thick translation”, this report analyzes and summarizes some experience and lesson drawn from the translation procedure. And this report includes four parts. The first part is task description including the introduction to the book, the author and text analysis. The second part is procedure description which focuses on the preparatory work and quality control of the translation. The third part, case study, is the body of my report which shows the application and analysis of some translation strategies and techniques. The fourth part is conclusion and reflection on this translation. It also contains my own idea on the translation of this text type and some problems unsolved. |
