On Functional Variation Of The Network Catchphrase From The Perspective Of Turn-taking Systematics

Network catchphrases which reflect the language variations and reveal the social problems have already become one of hot research topics in linguistics. The studies concerning network catchphrases have been long studied with rich achievements, which contributes significantly to the usage and development of network catchphrases. “wo ye shi zui le”, one of the latest network catchphrase, has been widely used, but it hasn’t been studied systematically so far, so it needs the further exploration. Based on the theories of turn-taking systematics and language variation, this research describes and analyzes materials containing the network catchphrase “wo ye shi zui le” with qualitative approach, and then figures out its functional variation and its variation mechanism in various contexts, which is expected to aid to the usage and explanation of “wo ye shi zui le”.It is found through the research that the network catchphrase “wo ye shi zui le” has two major functional variations of in network conversations in terms of structural functional variation and communicative functional variation. The first variation is manipulating the turns, which is reflected by claiming the turn at the beginning of the conversation, by grasping the turn in the middle and by holding the turn at the end of the conversation. The second one is accomplishing the conversations which is reflected by the usage of “wo ye shi zui le” in the second part of the adjacency pair. Moreover, the primary communicative function of “wo ye shi zui le” is to end the conversation, and then the variation occurs in terms of starting the conversation, constructing the harmonious communicative atmosphere and emphasizing the manner of speech.Meanwhile, the corresponding variation mechanism is found in the research: the internal cause and external cause. The vagueness of the meaning is the internal cause while the external ones are the influence of the media and the users’ politeness principle.This research will not only contribute to the development of theoretical and practical aspects of network catchphrases, but also will offer a kind of new way and direction to the future topics.
