Based on the translation of Between Two Worlds: How the English Became Americans, this thesis explores the application of Cohesion Theory by M. A. K. Halliday and R. Hasan in E-C translation. Bearing an awareness of the differences of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion between English and Chinese, this thesis conducts a detailed analysis of how some basic devices, such as the transformation of reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, reiteration and collocation, should be treated in E-C translation to maintain the discursive cohesion of both the original and the target text. The analysis is supported with some typical examples.
