The authoritative translators who translated Shui Hu Zhuan include Sidney Shapiro, J.H. Jackson and Pearl S. Buck. With different literary attainments, cultural foundation, translation proposition and different control abilities of Chinese and English, the translators provided different translation works, and these works absolutely provided a wealth corpus for the contrastive study of the nickname translation. The use of language also reflects a cognitive ability, so language is related to cognition activity closely. As a cross language and cross-cultural communication activity, Translation is related to people’s cognition closely as well.In this thesis, the nickname translations of Shui Hu Zhuan translated by three translators are used as a corpus for this contrastive study. The author spares no efforts to study whether the application of conceptual integration theory can guide the contrastive study of nickname translation and what the concrete operation process is. According to the prominent principle, nicknames in Shui Hu Zhuan are classified into seven types for convenient study and seven-mental-space model with strong explanatory power is put forward according to the previous study.After studying the nickname translation in the perspective of conceptual integration theory, several findings are achieved at last: the nickname study in Shui Hu Zhuan opens a window to get knowledge of the background, culture and society of the ancient time, which is full of high historical and cultural value; as an important part in cognitive linguistic, the conceptual integration theory can also directly and clearly display the whole process of translation practice and many phenomena which appear in the translation practice can be also explained; the three English versions are contrasted in the model, which directly display the advantages and disadvantages of different versions, then some corresponding translation strategies and suggestions can be efficiently put forward to improve the translation text; the condition that translation practice is put into the framework of conceptual integration theory undoubtedly provides a new perspective for the translation study and in-depth study of the conceptual integration theory itself.
