Shen Congwen and D·H·Lawrence both were quite controversial writers before, but later their works have been highly appreciated and have raised enthusiasm of study for scholars worldwide. Space distance and cultural differences did not stop them having similar attitudes towards life, that is looking for ideal life styles. Rich accomplishments on the works of Shen congwen and D·H·Lawrence have been achieved respectively in academic circle. But the achievements of comparative study are less. It needs to be explored using the spatial narrative theory to study the works of two writers. Therefore, the author attempts to have a comparative study of two novels, Shen Congwen’s Border Town and D·H·Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, from the perspective of the spatial narrative theory.This thesis begins from the introduction with the reasons for writing, the related research status at home and abroad and the meanings of studying the two novels, which is a preparation for the main body of the thesis. In the first chapter, the author mainly explains the origin of the concept of spatial narration, development course and the related research results, clarifying characteristics of spatial narrative theory, and try to provide strong theoretical support for study of this two novels. In chapter two, three, and four, the author mainly has a detailed analysis and discussion of of two novels on the guidance of the spatial narration respectively from the physical space narration, emotional space narration and the construction of space. Finally, combining with the analysis of the first four chapters, the author sums up the aim of writing this thesis using the spatial narrative theory to study the works of two writers.Through comparing and analyzing the spatial narration of the two novels, the author sorts out the effect that narration has on the heroes’ changes in the thoughts and feelings, and the function of space in novel narration, based on the physical, emotional space of the two works. Through the sense of space, the author sorts out the relationship between the author, the society, the text and the readers, and sums up the similarities and differences of the narrative functions of space in the two works and the ideal life forms that the two writers pursued.
