Hegel’s thought is one of the most important in the 19th century German, and it stands for the top of idealism philosophy. Marx’s theory of state is influenced by Hegel, and he was highly praised of Hegel. There is no doubt that Marx is standing on the shoulders of giants to see the world. Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts of Hegel includes many of his own ideas of the philosophy of state, however most of his theory is idealistic and has many defects. From the perspective of historical materialism, Marx critiqued Hegel’s law philosophy, he even wrote Hegel’s Philosophy Comment interpreting and criticizing Hegel’s ethical thought in Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts. In this book, Marx not only corrected Hegel’s ethical thought, but also put forward a series of new ideas and logical thought on state philosophy. Marx’s theory formed a new system of state, to some extent, he renovated Hegel’s theory. No one can deny his achievement and contribution in the field of philosophy.This paper combines Marx’s with Hegel’s state theories for research and comparison. The first part focuses on the main content of Hegel’s ethical theory, as his state theory belongs to his ethical theory. The second part mainly discusses the state theory of Marx, and his renovation to Hegel’s philosophy of state. The last part of the paper summarizes the reality significance of Marx’s state theory for which it has provided some solutions to practical issues.
