A Practice Report On Film Subtitling Translation Based On The Theory Of Foreignization And Domestication

China has a long translation history and has formed its own system of translation theories, part of which is subtitle translation. Compared with the studies on other text types, that on the subtitle translation is far from enough as it is a brand new area of translation. Therefore, more studies on the subtitle translation is needed, for the rapid development of film industry has put forward higher requirements on both the translation volume and translation speed of subtitling translation. This thesis analyzes the subtitling translation by examining the use of foreignizing method and domesticating method, hopefully, it can give people a better understanding of subtitling translation. Compared with other common literature, film and television works are different in some way:film is a screen art, in which screen has close connection with subtitling. So when we are translating a film subtitling, there’s no doubt that we should pay attention to basic translation methods, but we should also take the characteristics of film subtitling itself into consideration and make some suitable adaptation.Foreignizing method and domesticating method coexist in English-Chinese translation. The author uses these two methods mentioned above in translating the subtitling of the film Bridge of spies. As, film develops so rapidly in recent decades, it has become an important approach in transmitting different cultures all over the world. This thesis focuses on analyzing the subtitling translation of Bridge of Spies and mainly discusses how to use foreignizing method and domesticating method in translating film subtitling. During the translation process, the author finds that it is difficult to separate the two translation methods from each other. What we can do is just to use these two translation methods flexibly and in a complementary fashion in order that the Chinese people accept and understand the different culture and style presented by the film.At present, although there are many scholars from home and abroad expert in translation studies and have already made outstanding achievements, but there are not enough studies on subtitling academic research which need to be discussed further. In this paper, the author take the subtitling translation of the film Bridges of Spies for instance, "Foreignization and Domestication" for the theoretical perspective, to explor film subtitle translation and make a systematic summary of translation features, principles and laws of subtitle translation.Hopefully, it can encourage more scholars to study film subtitling translation as well as provide important reference for future translation and teaching.
