A Report On Translating The Study Of Ethnic Minorities’ Ethnical And Folk Beliefs From The View Of “Intangible Cultural Heritage”(Excerpts)

This is a translation report based on the translator’s translating practice. The translator chooses a part of the second chapter(about 11,000 Chinese characters) of The Study of Ethnic Minorities’ Ethnical and Folk Beliefs from the View of “Intangible Cultural Heritage” to do the translation practice. This part mainly talks about the forms of Yi Ethnic Group’s folk beliefs in Dali and Chuxiong of Yunnan Province. To be specific, it refers to nature worship(including the worship to the Heaven and the Earth, the worship to the Gods of Mountains, the worship to the Gods of Stones, the worship to the God of Fire) and the worship to tigers and eagles in totemism. Many culture-loaded words, words from Yi language and classical Chinese can be found in this part. So it is a great challenge how to keep the unique characteristics of the culture in the source text while introducing them to target readers. The translator employs the cultural translation theory of Susan Bassnett to solve the problem.This translation report can be divided into five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction part, including background, significance, objectives and layout of the report. Chapter two includes a brief introduction to the source text and analysis of it. In the third chapter, it talks about the translation background that includes Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory and the preparations the translator does. Chapter four lists difficulties in the translation and the methods for removing them. In the last chapter, translation experience and unsolved problems are concluded.
