The Study On The Series Of Rugao Mao Family

The Mao family was a big and famous one in Rugao, because most of the family members are men of talents. They not only devoted themselves to the country, but also made a great contribution to their hometown. As a family with culture, there are lots of literary works and romantic affairs for the later generations to admire. In the late Qing dynasty, the well-known scholar Mao Guangsheng who admired his ancestor Mao Xiang, a famous virtue, started to edit “the Series of Rugao Mao Family”. It took him more than ten years to finish the work. This series includes 86 persons, from Mao Ji in Ming dynasty to Mao Guangsheng in the Republic of China(1912-1949), all of them were good at writing poem or ci. It also introduces the biographies of each poet in detail, which saved the family literature, provided a great help for people to read and study the poetry of Ming and Qing dynasty. It has both literature and history value.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is composed of three aspects: the origin of Mao family, Mao Guangsheng’s life stories, the writing process and influences of the series. Due to the limitation of the length, the introduction was divided into two chapters. The authors to be introduced only including those who have published single books. The second chapter is about Mao family in Ming dynasty. The third chapter mainly talks about the Mao family from Qing dynasty to the Republic of China(1912-1949). In addition, it includes biographies of the five brothers of Mao Guangsheng’s grandfather Zhou Xingyi. At last, the fourth chapter explains how the series came out from the point of edition and philology. During the narration, some of the poem and ci have been compared. In the end, there is a conclusion about the collection value and collation value of “the Series of Rugao Mao Family”.
