The Attitude Of Live And Death And Its Narrative Style In 《Zuozhuan》

The problem of live and death is the major theme of many literary work, people not only discuss why to live and how to live, but also the matter of death itself, this question is also one part of the world view. The Pre-Qin Period was a period of thoughtemancipation,many academic schools began to grow, people started to actively probe into some philosophical problem such as the cognition and value of live and death. We can see it from many different kinds of literary works.Mamong them <Zuozhuan> is very outsatanding.<Zuozhuan > was written to explain<Chunqiu >,but the writer, Zuoqiuming added his own idea, and these recreation part are very literary. So <Zuozhuan> is not only a historical work but a precious literary work also. The narrative part of <Zuozhuan> is very brilliant and plentiful, the author described many characters and historical events like stories. From these characterizations and narratives readers can come to know the view of live and death, this view concludes the fatalism and the superstition ideas which is based on the primitive thought, and also concludes the value of life and the attitude towards death like thinking highly of life and undervaluation of death, giving life to brotherhood and giving personal benefit to social rites. From this We can know the people’s view of live and death which is based on the Confucianism in Pre-Qin Period.The former studies of “the view of live and death” on <Zuozhuan > was limited in the field of philosophy and history,but this thesis broke through the former studies by meticulous with the point of view of narratology. In the past, the studies on the view of live and death appeared only fragmentarily in the thesis and works of the Pre—Qin culture and Confucianism studies, we still have not got a special research finding on this subject, so it is not complete. This thesis gave a overall and complete study on this work. The thesis expounded viewpoints by making the text of <Zuozhuan > as the object and combining with the historical codes and records from the point of view narratology. Firstly,the view of live and death was influenced by the primitive witchcraft and Confucianism. Secondly, the view of live and death not only had strong historical background——the muddled political background and tight patriarchal system, but also has special ideological culture background—— the changing of the methodology from God to humanbeing, the feudalcode of ethics and the Confucian three immortal. Thirdly,the author of <Zuozhuan> gave his own view of live and death by the analysis of narrating part: they are being satisfied with God and fate, giving up live for brotherhood, placing righteousness above family loyalty ect. And criticized the wrong point of view of live and death: the attitude of live and death depending on God, rejecting live and seeking death, being capricious and having one’s own way. Fourthly, analysed the special artistic skills in the text. Fifthly, described the influence of Chinese culture on the view of live and death by Chinese funeral and the self-awareness of Shi class.
