A Study Of Lei Siqi’s Scholarship On The Changes

Lei Siqi was a Yi-ologist that made a fusion of Confucianism and Taoism in later Song and early Yuan Dynasty.His famous books that were handed down till nowadays are "general transformation of Yi map" and "general transformation of Yi divination", which show Lei Siqi’s understanding of original issue of Yi. For settling this issue, Lei Siqi made an overview and innovation about map-book Yi-ology from Song dynasty, and established the approach to elucidation of Yi’s original issue in term of image numberology. This paper tried to study Lei’s Yi-ology from the angle of number, which is divided into two parts-with the view of number interpreting Yi and with the view of number interpreting divination. According to the order how "general transformation of Yi map" interpret Yi, The former view discussed "Hetu forty", three heaven and two earth doctrine, appearance and un-apperance of five, three heaven two earth and three five intricacy and so on. Besides, he used the Hetu’s number motion to imitate the world how to form and move. The later view studied Lei’s divination, the number of heaven and earth, the number of nine and six. By discussing the process of dividing divination and some question about divination in history, it provided some mathematical basis for further clarifying the divination original meaning of Yi. Finally, this paper tried to connect Yitu and Yi number under the horizon of number, and evaluate the contribution Lei Siqi made on the Yi-ology. This paper is divided into five parts:Sectionone, this paper introduces the life of LeiSiqi,and his study of Confucianism in early period and Taoism in later period. This section also presents the books he written and the people he made friends with. All these suggest that he is a scholar with much cultural connotation and academicachievement. On the other hand, this paper discusses the background of Lei Siqi’sacademiccreation. Lei Siqi inherit results of previous studies for science books and Shifa, and develop a principle of explaining Yitu by Yi. Lei Siqi created its own Yi’s system in certain background.Section two, this paper introduces Hetu and Luoshu doctrine. It pointed out books is an important content of image-number learning. In additon, Hetu and Luoshu doctrine is the important content of books. As the representative of books in Song dynasty, Hetu and Luoshu doctrine reflected the union of number and Yi-map. And it expounds the evolutive logic of Hetu and Luoshu, based on Lei’s "HetuDialectics"and "Hetu legacy theory". For Lei’s doctrine of "Hetu forty", this section mainly introduces Yi map scholars’description of Hetu and Luoshu and Lei’s relative critics.Section three, it discusses the method of interpreting Yi-with the view of number interpreting Yi. This part illustrates the doctrine of "Hetu forty" from the beginning of cause of Lei’s map-making. By meanings of generation and operation of number composed of Hetu, this paper illustrates the principal of "middle way" and "interaction of virtual and reality", and makes integration of Hetu number, Tian Di number and Da Yan number. Thereby, it introduces the mean of Lei’s "Use three", and expounds "three Heaven and two Earth doctrine" and "appearance and un-appearance of five"of Yi-zhuan with different combination of number.And this paper descript relationship between two parts.In final, with simulating the change of Yin-Yang among the universe by the operation of Hetu, it elaborates "the accordance of Yi and Universe".Section four, this part discusses Lei Siqi how to build the dibination theory of Yi. This paper takes Dan Yan divination as the core, and discusses the relationship between Dan Yan number and heaven earth number from the angle of number, and simulates the process of Dan Yan divination according to the symbols of tai chi and eight trigram. At the same time, it explains some questions about divination in the past, for example, the number of nine-six and Hexagram’s transformation. Finally, it detailed the problem of "hang one" in the process of divination.Section five, this paper evaluates the influence of Lei’s Yi-ology, as well as its status and contribution in history of Yi-ology, with the modern scholars’research achievement of Lei’s Yi-ology.
