Based on the Niuwangdan Festival of the Dongjun Village,Shangshuai Town,Lianshan County in the Guangdong Province,this article discusses the primitive worship of cattle by the Zhuang ethnic group,the status the cattle hold in their totem system and the connection between the totem of cattle and today’s Niuwangdan Festival through the study of customs in the culture of Zhuang ethnic group related to cattle,including myths and legends about cattle,folk songs and dances with the theme of the worship of cattle,sacrifice and scriptures,taboos surrounding cattle as well as the cattle-themed decorations and patterns.Meanwhile,this article studies the influence and effect of today’s government intervention through the lens of careful analysis of the custom of Niuwangdan Festival.Eventually,we can conclude that from the earlier nature worship like the worship of cattle to today’s Niuwangdan Festival aimed for tourists,people’s understanding and concept of the nature object of cattle has been transforming,which is a testament to the human being’s change of attitude towards nature from reverence to exploitation and modification.
