The novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, as the best-selling book list in the United States, affects generations of Americans. But in the academic circle it is neglected and there are a few research papers and monographs about it. Thus the complexity of the novel is not only because of the novel itself but also of the deficiency of the academic circle.It is belonged to Bildungsroman which will be analyzed in the following from the angle of the ethical significance of the narrative. Firstly, it is in this paper mainly the ethics significance, namely the ethics value of Francie’s narrative, will be uncovered and summarized. The way of thinking of naive child, shows the positive and constantly accumulated aspects of the world. Secondly, the other narrator, which is the same important as Francie in the story, the omniscient narrator of adult narrative ethics, is analyzed. Adult narrator rational factors play a leading role which is affected by many elements such as ideology and so on. As a result, the world described by Ta is cruel, violent, and cold. It is this double-layered narrative structure puts into the text more tension that makes ethical meaning of text narration more complicated.However, the different encounters of the novel between the common readers and researchers are due to the different degrees of the reader’s Misreading of the text. The reason of misreading also is probed in this paper in two aspects of novel narrative technique and the experience of the resonance between the author and reader. In this thesis the question of how power discourse makes use the misreading is reveled:through accepting discipline and escaping from suffering. This paper not only provides a way of interpreting the growth novel but also explains how the organ of authority can make use the tension of the novel in according to the concrete circumstance that the reader experience to arrive the goal of correcting and remedy of child...
