The meaning of words is one of the central problems in modern philosophy of language. The word meaning parse has many different interpretations in different contexts. Hans Reichenbach is a significant figure in contemporary analytic philosophy, and his theory of meaning plays an import role in his philosophical system as well as in the philosophy of language. Reichenbach had figured out the significance of the physical theoretical propositions within a probability theory. I am going to focus on Reichenbach’s original materials, and make a comparative study based on the international as well as the domestic research. In the second part, I will try to illustrate the significance of Reichenbach’s theory of meaning within the history of philosophy, especially within the philosophy of language, and give a detailed analysis of the term meaning parse, theory of truth and extended definition of meaning. Reichenbach had proposed a probability theory of meaning. In the third part, I will make a comparative analysis between Reichenbach’s theory of meaning and other traditional alternatives, behavioral theory of meaning, pragmatism theory of meaning and the theory of ordinary language. In the fourth part, I will consider about the criticism on Reichenbach’s theory of meaning. The first one is about the heritage and ongoing impact of Reichenbach’s theory of meaning. Secondly, I will offer a detailed analysis of the challenges for Reichenbach’s theory, and propose my reply with regard to ideas like "reasonable to accept" and "non-operational doctrine". In the final part, I will summarize the pros and cons of Reichenbach’s theory of meaning, and consider about how to integrate its advantages into contemporary theory of meaning.
