Research On Ancient Sports In Chinese Idioms

Study of Chinese ancient sports, in addition to the official and unofficial historical documents, ancient poetry, prose, drama and fiction of notes, and all kinds of literary works are also valuable research materials. That is recorded by literary works can reflect social life of the ancients. Most of the Chinese idioms come from literary works; it is the product of cultural diversity. Therefore this research uses the literature material method, the ancient Chinese method, logic analysis and other methods to research the sports in ancient China. The writer will collect the idioms that have close relationship with sports first, and then analyze them according to the sports items, which may reflect the basic situation of Chinese ancient sports and the social development as well.Research shows: firstly, the idioms have a close relationship with sports activities.On the one hand, sports activities provide content and material for the creation of idioms; on the other hand, we can see the sports development and characteristics from idioms, which is a benefit for promoting sports culture. Secondly, the sports culture could affect the creation of the idioms, which is very obvious. For example, there are many idioms that describe martial arts, because the military sports is the main part during pre Qin period. Thirdly, according to the contents that are reflected in idioms, we can divide Chinese ancient sports into five different historical stages, namely the pre Qin period, Qin and Han dynasties, the period of Three Kingdoms to the North dynasty,the Sui, Tang and Five dynasties, and the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.Fourthly, with the developments during that time, the military sports have gradually become weak, which shows sports development always comes to its nature. Sports activities are getting out of other social factors and eventually become a relative social culture. Fifthly, the vicissitudes of the ancient Chinese sports can be reflected in idioms,different sports opinions in the idioms have important influence on people’s concepts and exercises ways.
