| This thesis is an investigation based on a survey of the cross-cultural awareness with English major students as well as staff members who work in an English environment and western-culture. In order to explore for practical strategies, the author discussed the current situation of cross-cultural awareness cultivation and difficulties of translation teaching through the questionnaire survey and data analysis.Based on the questionnaire data analysis, the author found that the students and working staff are lack of the second language usage, both of whom are short of cross-cultural awareness. In actual study and work, they cannot accurately or skillfully use English to communicate with foreigners, which have caused misunderstanding and even breakdown of communication for they paid too much attention to translation theories and language skills. In the current situation, the author has found teachers’neglect of cross-cultural cultivation is one of the reasons, and in order to improve the situation, analysis of translation teaching difficulties has been done.The author attributed the difficulties to Chinese and western cultural differences and students individual cultural differences. Chinese and western cultural differences refer to students’awareness of the cultural differences between China and western countries, such as national habits, cultural heritage and ways of thinking; while students individual cultural differences lie in the students’ cultural backgrounds, such as regional differences, family backgrounds and motivation of learning, etc.In view of the current situation and difficulties above, the author proposed strategies of three levels to cultivate students’cross-cultural awareness. Firstly, improving the system of translation textbooks. Updating and adjusting textbooks’ content according to subject development, developing evaluation and revise standards of textbooks. Secondly, balancing the individual cultural differences among students. Under the guidance of 5C teaching objectives, teachers could guide students to play initiative to reduce the cultural differences through the way of culture comparison and intercultural communication. Thirdly, adopting culture teaching to translation teaching process. The author proposed to add more exercises with cultural comparison courses in translation teaching, and to provide more materials that include cultural differences, and also recommended a task-based teaching model that foregrounds cultural settings. The author put forward the principles of operability, principles of implementation by stage and the principle of coordinating culture teaching and translation teaching at last, along with detailed suggestions. Through these strategies and suggestions, teachers are required to readjust their teaching philosophy and improve teaching methods so as to enhance students’ cross-cultural awareness and to improve their competence for cross-cultural communication.This thesis provides feasible methods and suggestions for the implementation of cultivating cross-cultural awareness in translation teaching. It also makes a preliminary research and exploration on the organic combination of cultural teaching and translation teaching. The author hopes that her research can shed lights on cultivating cross-cultural awareness in translation teaching class. |
