Xu Dishan, one of the most extraordinary authors during 1920 s to 1930 s, who had the distinguished spiritual pursuit, outlook on life, romantic thoughts with traditional features,which spurred him to write and study in a way, differed from others. His works are based on the backgrounds of his living communities such as Tainan, Minnan, South Asia and Beijing;The images and the characters of his novels also brought the colors of distinctive Buddhist thought, Christian idea and Taoist culture. Xu Dishan constantly kept a critical view and loyal feeling to the truth, he paid much concern on people’s lives and the transcendence of himself,he tried hard to find out the way to overcome the obstacles of the present life, and he buried himself in searching for the meaning and value of the life. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism,along with the native philosophies such as Confucianism and Taoism, all lived inside his mind;however, Taoism was the mainstream in his mind. His personality, attitude, writing characteristics, and academic study were embodied with Taoism.Xu Dishan was sincere, he was fond of nature and freedom, he still preserved the traces of childishness, and he kept a peaceful mind to the world, which reflected on the truth that he adored the characters of Taoism like real, natural and spontaneous. The dissertation is written in a way by tracing Xu’s origins, which is based on the research conditions of Xu’s course of his growth, the personality and the value of his life, Xu’s novels, essays, academic study which carried the ideas of Taoism are illustrated in this dissertation. The focal point is to express his intimacy and worship to the natural world, his reclusion to the social reality, his compliance reflected on the characters in his novels, so as to unveil his attitude to the spontaneous life, more important, the ideal spirit of converting to the nature and valuing the truth.
