A Dilemma Between Traditional Culture And Modern Civilization-the Study Of Chi Zijian’s Cultural Position

I attempt to interpret Chi Zijian from a cultural standpoint, and explore her cultural position from her attitude towards traditional culture and modern civilization.In 1980 ’s, Chi Zijian left her isolated and backward hometown, and came to city with a vision of modern civilization. But soon, Chi Zijian personally felt that the modern civilization had brought great progress to the human kind on side, at the same time, it brought a great disaster to the human kind and nature. So, she criticized the weaknesses of modern civilization, on the other hand, she poetically thought of the traditional culture and native land.Theoretically speaking, the modern civilization should be the rescuer of the backward traditional culture and native land, but in reality it buried the goodness of traditional culture and native land. This led to Chi Zijian’s cultural anxiety, she fell into a dilemma between traditional culture and modern civilization. Of course, there were more deep-seated reasons for this situation, one was the dual identity of Chi Zijian, being both a "country folk" and a modern intellectual made her always look the traditional culture and modern civilization with double eyes; the other one was, Chi Zijian could not treat the traditional culture and modern civilization dialectically and historically, which made some of her views were biased.Chi Zijian’s thinking and exploration of the traditional culture and modern civilization, showed her deep and broad humanistic feelings, at the time of humanistic spirit lost, it was worth our affirmation. Furthermore, in Chi Zijian’s writing of the traditional culture and modern civilization, her narrative is full of tension, her works possess great artistic value. In addition, Chi Zijian inherited the cultural position of Shen Congwen and some other writers, there are differences in inheriting, it revealed Zijian’s uniqueness.Chi Zijian’s critical consciousness, skepticism and foresight made her an important writer in the contemporary literary circles.
