This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is excerpted from Lisa Jewell’s book The House We Grew up in, which tells the story about the peaceful,comfortable, sorrowful, and happy rural life of the Bird family, and the book makes a detailed description of the conflict of love and hate of the Bird family. The theme of this book is the descriptions of Easter from different growth period of the children.Each period paints a set of vivid, warm, sad, simple pictures, and shows all the joys and sorrows of the Birds’ family life. The translator has searched from the Internet and library collections, and found no published Chinese translation up till now.Nowadays in China, people are indulged in the hustle and bustle world even more.Therefore, the attachment of their home is decreasing. By translating the book, the translator aims at arousing people to think about the problems of family life, to comprehend the real implication of the family, to understand the loved ones, to learn to be grateful, so that they can integrate into their family life better.The source text of this translation project amounts to sixteen thousand words.The translator selects the first two chapters. This part, based on plurality of different time nodes, respectively describes the vivid life of the Bird family. The book mainly tells the story of the protagonist’s daughter Megan who came back to The Bird House,looking at the dilapidated house, and remembering the pleasant days together with her whole family in childhood.As a piece of literary work, the source text is characterized by its linguistic style and diction as follows: Firstly, translating is not just the transformation of language,but the conversion of culture. As for culture, there are distinctive lifestyle, national sentiment, cognitive styles and values between China and England. The translator follows the style of Chinese characteristics, conveying the emotions and thoughts of the source text accurately. Secondly, the language used by the author is simple, but conveys deep emotion. It is enriched with diverse culture and appeals to the readers.In order to comprehend the author’s writing style and technique in-depth, the translator collects the relevant background information and materials, including books,magazines, and periodicals during the preparation period, which enable the translatorto remain the poetic imagery and emotion of the source text. Thirdly, there are a large amount of terminology in the book, such as proper nouns, abbreviations, and idioms.The translator obtains the Chinese translation by on-line searching and relevant books consulting. Lastly, there are plenty of simple sentences as well as some long and difficult sentences. The translator adopts the methods such as sentence reconstruction,following the original syntactic order, refraining discourses, which enables the translation close to the source text as possible.In the process of translating, the translator pursues a smooth and accurate translation by consulting relevant books, searching online, and adopting the translation knowledge and techniques flexibly. Meanwhile, the translator expects to provide some practical suggestions, obtained during the translating process, for the translating with same genre in the future.
