A Translation Project Report On Hamam Balkania: A Novel And Other Stories (Chapter ⅩⅧ To Chapter ⅩⅪ)

This is a project report on translation of Hamam Balkania, a book written by Vladislav Bajac, a famous contemporary Serbian writer. The translator selects its English edition as the source text. With two mainlines and against the backdrop of the rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire, Hamam Balkania tells a story about identity, multiple identity and the changes of identity, which involves the fields of politics, culture, nationality, religion and so on. The translator selects Chapter XVIII to Chapter XXI to translate:on the one hand, it introduces several writers struggling for their personal identity and national identity with literary works; on the other hand, it is about Mehmed-pasha who tried to replace the traditional conquest with the diplomatic negotiation. The original work of Hamam Balkania has won a lot of international prizes for its values in both literature and history, so it is of great realistic significance to translate this book into Chinese in promoting the cultural exchanges between China and Serbia.Main problems in the translation process are as follows:how to translate the proper nouns and specialized terms of strong Serbian characteristics accurately; how to understand the abstract philosophical principles and subtle metaphors in this book correctly and best deliver the information in the source language text to Chinese readers. Based on the Functional Equivalence theory established by Eugene A. Nida, the translator uses some specific translation methods, such as liberal translation, addition, omission, conversion and so on to overcome the difficulties in the project and achieve a proper translation.Through the practice, the translator has known that a capable translator should not only be rigorous and proficient, but also well-read and eager to learn, so the translator still needs to improve her translation skills through more practice and exercise.
