| The verbal double-reduplication of monosyllable “VV†is often observed in the Faku dialect and dialects in the Northeast. In terms of form and meaning,double-reduplication of monosyllable “VV†can be divided into three types:“VV1â€, replication made up of monosyllabic morphemes or replications made up of double-reduplicated monosyllables, meaning action and behavior, speech and voice, changing status and psychological feeling; “VV2â€, syntactic replication made up of monosyllabic verbs, meaning action and behavior; “VV3â€,speech repetition, meaning action. In terms of semantics, this paper found that most “VV1†replication words shift their meanings to indicate action or behavior, and focuses on description;that “VV2†syntactic replication words do not change the meaning of “V†but change their grammar, indicating small-scale action, short period, attempt or suggestion; that “VV3†speech repetition words do not change in meaning of“V†or grammar, but develop meaning of context, indicating repetition of an action.“VV1†is a verb with close internal structure and it cannot be changed into“V-Vâ€, “V 了 V†or “V ç€ V ç€ â€; “VV2â€replicates in syntax and it can be changed into “V-V†or “V 了 V†but not into “V ç€ V ç€â€; “VV3†is repetition of words and it can only be changed into “V ç€ V ç€ â€. It can be therefore, concluded that the “VV†structure of double-replicated monosyllables is a shared structure for three types: “VV1†is a word whose structure can be analyzed from syllabic replication or morphemic replication perspective; “VV2â€is syntactic structure which can be analyzed from syntactic perspective; “VV3â€is speech which can only be deem as a variant of the speech. The pragmatic value of three types of VV structure varies: form the perspective of information delivery, most “VV1†carry speakers’ anti-expectedinformation while most “VV2†express speakers’ expected information; “VV3â€do not bear of function of information delivery in itself, but assist in delivering information. From the perspective of emotional expression, most “VV1†express speakers’ negative emotion such as loathing or antipathy; most “VV2†express speakers’ euphemistic or delighted positive emotion; while “VV3†only assist in expressing emotion. |
