The evolution of the image of the Chinese from European and American viewpoint, which is clearly worth considering. Overall, the image of the Chinese in western society showing the path that from praise to derogatory in 20th century. Chinoiserie was widespread in the Europe in 17th and 18th century. But with the development of history, rising in Europe, however, China was still stalled. European attitudes towards China transformed from worship to defiance. This attitude change affected American understanding of the image of Chinese. From the mid-19th century, China was plagued with frequent wars, natural calamities and man-made misfortunes. At that time a large pool of labor was needed in America. Therefore a large number of Chinese migrated to the United States, which contributed a lot to American development. However, Chinese had been excluded by the society during the time from entering the United States to the pass of The Chinese Exclusion Act. The Chinese image was going through historical change form positive to negative.This paper attempts to study the image of Chinese of American mass media publications in the 19th century,and deeply analyzing and interpreting the transition of Chinese image from the aspects including labour force, race and politics starting with the Chinese image of American mass media publications from 1870 to the end of the 19th century. By studying the experience and historical transition of Chinese group in the United States in the 19th century to conclude the interactive relationship between caring Chinese images and historical context of Chinese exclusion.
