Research On Plant Patterns In Matisse’s Oil Paintings

The painting language of Matisse varies. He has studied primitive art, Chinese art, Japanese art and Persian miniature, formed his own painting language through cross and overlaping usage of multiple ways of painting.Through observation and study of Persian miniature, Matisse integrated the plant patterns of miniature into his own works, and combined it closely with his own painting language. Lines, as a basic part of plant patterns, fused casualty with preciseness and generalization with exquisiteness.As generalized pattern with simple shape and bright color, geometric plant pattern is one of the most widely used patterns in Matisse’s works. The position of geometric plant pattern has also moved from the background to the main body. During conversion of complicated and simple, the plant pattern has achieved harmony with the whole picture.Geometric palnt pattern belongs to flat image, however, in Matisse’s works, the flat image has demonstrated stereoscopic effect, thus helped him to create spaces. As a master of color, Matisse has extremely strong sensation and application ability of colors. Through repeating usage of adjacent colors and contrast colors, both the picture theme and the character’s emotions are highlighted. At the same time, the increasing and repeating usage of plant pattern doesn’t make the image messy. From this we can see that Matisse has strong control power over the picture. Matisse has used contrasting colors to paint plant patterns for several times in oil painting, not only to seek for impact of the picture, but also to demonstrate the strong feelings of the character in the picture and himself, connnecting the painter’s emontions with the paint more directly, thus to highlight the theme of the picture. The plant pattern in Matisse’s oil paintings came from multiple painting languages and enlightened the development of modern art in various aspects.
