This is an English-Chinese translation report. The original text is Glitter and Glue, a book written by Kelly Corrigan. It tells a story that the author works as a nanny for a widower’s family in Australia. Kelly’s father is an extrovert, while her mother always shows her solemn face. So she loves her father more. When Kelly takes care of two children without their mother to get along with the family, she gradually understands her own parents, and the relationship with her mother is getting better. The translation material comes from chapter 1-8, part one of the book, which is more than 15,000 words.The book Glitter and Glue is a memoir, which recalls the author’s life experience in her twenties. The source text is characterized by the following features in style and content. Firstly, the language is very close to real life and humorous. Secondly, there are many conversations in the text. Thirdly, it contains so many proper nouns, like some famous names of people, places, tourist attractions, and games. Fourthly, there are some long and difficult sentences. Fifthly, the author is good at narration interposed. Moreover, there are many seemingly quite familiar words and phrases in the book, the translator understands the meanings quite well, but they are still rather difficult to be translated into Chinese appropriately. In order to make the translation accurate, fluent and idiomatic, the translator uses a variety of methods, like adopting translation strategies and skills(literal translation and free translation), resorting parallel text, consulting relevant books and dictionaries, searching on the Internet. In the pre-translation period, the translator makes adequate preparations and know much about the background of the book and the author, even if there are some problems in translation process, they all be solved finally. Through this translation practice, the translator gains a better understanding of English-Chinese translation, foreign cultural life. At last, the original text is rich in content and useful to the translator.
