For the Chinese film, traditional Chinese opera has been the research object that helps Chinese films for seeking national style. And as a youth domestic director, Zheng Dasheng, has been an experimental director who hardly ever participates in commercial item. His works always pursuit specific innovations in film language, and tries to express Chinese traditional cultural idea in his image. Actually, from 2008, with the release of "Inspector And Prince", he gradually develops a mature personal film style. Revolving around traditional Chinese opera elements, his film language tries to express the freehand brushwork of traditional Chinese opera through specific film means, thus the effects of the combination of virtuality and reality, namely, traditional Chinese opera and film art, would be achieved.This article tries to critically review Zheng Dasheng’s feature films so far, especially the creative trajectory of his films that pay attention on the historical stories. From his particular use of opera elements, this article will analyze how his movie try and achieve the freehand brushwork film language. His cinematic application of opera elements such as spoken part of Chinese opera, stylized performance has established a set of film language, which includes unique and innovative national style. This article will discourse the creative trajectory of the Zheng Dasheng’s work, the transformation of traditional Chinese opera elements and the traditional aesthetic film language, and then explain how his films presents the connotation of traditional culture through his freehand brushwork film language.
