The Research Of Gui Maoyi’s Biography, Social Network And Writing

Gui Maoyi, a mid-Qing poet of women, wrote considerable elegant poems and built close relationship with many famous poets. In this paper I will take ten poetry anthologies of Gui as the research object, search for clues to important time, place, characters in order to know her different common life experience and relationship with friends. Then summarize the features of poetry creation. This paper will be discussed from the following four aspects:The first chapter is about Gui Maoyi’s family background, life experience and poetry creation. Gui was born in a literary family and married into another literary family. All the family members encouraged her creation. But in middle age Gui Maoyi was part forever with her three children and suffered from both poverty and sickness. She put her life sentiment into ten poetry anthologies which have a high artistic level.The second chapter is focus on Gui’s social network. Gui Maoyi is a disciple of Li Tingjing, Yuan Mei and Pan Yijuan. She has close relationship with Gong Zizhen, Chen Wenshu and their family. Xi Peilan and Wang Qian, two gifted poets of women, are her bosom friends. The complex and diverse social network shows the uniqueness of Gui Maoyi compared with other female poets.The third chapter analyzes Gui Maoyi’s thought and the way of life. The deterioration of life urge Gui make money with her talent. The pursuit of fame is the inner reason why Gui wants be close to the literary moguls. The way of life spurs her to build a larger social network on external motivation.The fourth chapter analyzes Gui Maoyi’s writing from the aspects of poetry theme, style and defect. In Gui Maoyi’s view, true emotion is the core of poetry. She is good at writing the painting-poem, the leisure-mood-poem, the object-chanting poem and the history-chanting poem. Her poetry style is both fresh and magnificent. But there are also some poems which have the similar content and form or lack of true feelings reducing the artistic level.
