Abstract/Summary:
As a master of Hong Kong gangster film,Johnnie To’s works have attracted a large number of audience. Comparing with other Hong Kong gangster movies,the significant feature of Johnnie To’s works is the representation of complex male power relationship and operation mechanism of power system.This paper analyzes the male power relationship and its image expression of Johnnie To’s gangster film. The introductory part analyzes the deficiency in the study of Johnnie To’s gangster film,demonstrated the description of power hold the key in its film narration;in Chapter Two, the connotation of power narration is analyzed, the power narration in Hong Kong gangster film from different periods is also illustrated;Chapter Three researches the relationship between male individual and the power network in male group,pointed out the narrative features of his works;Chapter Four uses the analysis of modern power operation mechanism of Foucault, summarized and described the four kinds of power operation mode in Johnnie To’s films:surveillance,discipline body, punishment and contest for the right to speak; Chapter Five discuss the situation of character and power relationship reflects in Johnnie To’s stylized image expression,summarized the characteristic of Johnnie To’s power image as:cold violence,the control of male in closed space and the special position relations under the leadership of power.As a native Hong Kong director,Johnnie To’s gangster film is also a metaphor of Hong Kong political reality.The analyzes of male power and its image expression of Johnnie To’s gangster film will give us a better understanding of the characteristic style of Johnnie to and the development of Hong Kong local films genre.
