This paper aims to look into the deviation in the pronunciation of English consonants produced by Chinese English postgraduates due to the influence of the mother tongue. In this study, the writer is interested to analyze the phonological errors made by the English postgraduates from Shanghai Normal University majoring in English Teaching Methodology. The main focus of this study is the 24 English consonants. By conducting the experiment study, the writer is able to find: first, the English consonant pronunciation errors produced by the students; and second, possible factors that influence their errors. In collecting the data, the writer firstly recorded the pronunciation of English postgraduates from Shanghai Normal University majoring in English Teaching Methodology when they read the pronunciation tasks provided. Then the writer conducted a detailed experiment using the software Praat to do the acoustic analysis of consonant pronunciation spoken by Chinese English postgraduates. From these results, we can conclude that these postgraduates fail to have a good mastery of the English consonant sounds, because some of them are still influenced by their first language pronunciation system. Finally, the writer suggests the future researchers conduct further research in spoken English since the recording number of this research is limited. They could continue this study and find more information of students’ weakness in pronouncing English words.
