On The Treatment Of Implicit Information In English-Chinese Literary Translation

The thesis is a report on the basis of translation practice of Benita, An African Romance, a novel written by H. Rider Haggard. The report is divided into five chapters: Task Description, Process Description, Case Analysis, Implications and Conclusion. In the two previous installments, I represent the overall description of the course of translation. Case Analysis serving as the core of the report gives an introduction to the relevance theory, features on implicit information, and the treatment of E-C literary text translation.On the framework of relevance theory, the thesis makes an analysis of literary text to meet the cognitive context and expectation in relation to its implicit information. In the process of translation,the author’s concept was restricted either to the text itself or to the context of inference. As we know, a translator should seek optimal relevance to manifest the writer’s original purpose hindered by implicit expression of endeavor of judgment and inference. As the properties of implicit information, which are displayed in the existence of syntax, pragmatics, etc., Gutt proposed the strategies for direct and indirect translation, a viewpoint that provides us with the treatments on implicit information.Conclusions are made in the report that owing to the focus on implicit information represented as language structure and literary traits, the author adopted direct translation in the application of semantic extension, explication and variation, and indirect translation of adaptation, addition, and omission in accordance to the relevance principle. The author found that the discourse furnishes a new approach to accomplish successful communication with less processing effort to achieve greater contextual effect.
