Quantitative Contrastive Analysis Of The Prosodic Features Of C-E Translated Poems

The author tries to use a self-created corpus to analyze the prosodic features of the three English versions of Chang Hen Ge from both macro and micro perspectives with quantitative comparative approaches. The three English versions of the poem the author chooses as the objects of the study are the version by Xu Yuanchong, the version by Yang Hsien-yi & Gladys Yang, and the version by W. J.B. Fletcher. In this thesis, the author wants to discuss the renouncing or remaining of the prosodic features of poems in translation and how to reach the aesthetics of rhymes and formal beauty at utmost in poetry translation.Corpus linguistics and corpus stylistics are introduced here as the theoretical framework which help to support this study as a whole. Corpus-based approaches are playing an important role in translation studies in recent years. A parallel corpus with the original version and three English versions of Chang Hen Ge is constructed in the thesis. Through extracting the statistic information, the author wants to find out which version of Chang Hen Ge among the four versions is the richest in adopting prosodic features and which English version of Chang Hen Ge tends to conform to the original one to the largest extent in this respect among the three ones.Basically, quantitative contrastive analysis makes up the main methodology of the thesis. The original and three Englishversions of Chang Hen Ge will be analyzed with some certain parameters. Moreover, Computer Software Antconc 3.2.4 will also be applied here to calculate the type token ratio and repetition ratio that represents word variety and word frequency respectively.The conclusions would be reached according to the application of the quantitative analysis of rhythm and the contrastive results. When it comes to the translation styles of the three versions, they can be divided according to the application of the prosodic features. And the two translation strategies conform to certain quantified standards of rhythms. Thus, translators are suggested to take the prosodic features into consideration if they would like to make full use of the rhythms in the process of poetry translation.
